our mission

We are a group of early-career biologists committed to making our corner of academia a more inclusive and equitable environment. Rigorous intellectual work requires contributions from a diversity of perspectives and backgrounds. Academia benefits from increased accessibility, and we work toward that goal.

what we do

SSC’s previous work has focused on defining the scope of the problem within our own department here at UNC. Based on this information, SSC helped to facilitate the collaborative definition of our community values and guidelines, now posted around the building and on the department’s website. Now, we help members of our community develop the skills necessary to embody those values, even in difficult situations. Individually, we also work to educate ourselves so we can serve as nonjudgmental peer resources for anyone experiencing conflict in the department.
